United Airlines Flight UA2005 from Chicago O'Hare to Minneapolis was diverted to Madison, Wisconsin, after a 75-year-old passenger made multiple attempts to breach the cockpit.
The Boeing 737-900 carried 147 passengers and six crew members when the incident occurred on May 30, 2026. The aircraft landed at Dane County Regional Airport between 9:11 and 9:30 p.m. after air traffic control directed the diversion.
Off-duty law enforcement officers on board restrained the Russian-speaking passenger, who appeared to be experiencing a mental health crisis. The individual attempted repeatedly to reach the cockpit before being brought under control.
"Don't think they were able to cuff him but were able to get control of him after multiple attempts to try to breach the cockpit."
The Dane County Sheriff's Office took custody of the passenger immediately after landing. FBI Milwaukee Field Office personnel responded to the airport but determined that no charges would be pursued.
"A subject was detained by the Dane County Sheriff's Office and afterwards, passengers resumed their flight."
FBI Milwaukee spokesperson Caroline Clancy confirmed the sequence of events. The aircraft departed Madison and reached Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport between 2:15 and 2:30 a.m. on May 31 with no injuries reported to any passengers or crew.
The incident followed standard aviation security protocols that authorize off-duty officers to intervene in flight. The rapid restraint prevented further escalation and allowed the flight to continue after a brief ground stop.
