Retired San Fernando police chief Fabian M. Valdez will lead the New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy starting June 22.
The New Mexico Department of Public Safety announced the appointment on June 12. Valdez succeeds former director Sonya Chavez, who resigned in April 2025. Public Safety Deputy Secretary Sylvia Serna has served as acting director since that time.
Officials selected Valdez following an extensive and highly competitive search. The academy provides standardized training to law enforcement personnel across the state, including basic certification courses and advanced programs for officers and supervisors.
"After an extensive and highly competitive search, we are proud to welcome Fabian Valdez as the next director of the New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy," said Jason Bowie, DPS Cabinet Secretary.
Valdez brings decades of experience from California municipal policing. His background includes command-level leadership in a department serving a diverse urban population near Los Angeles.
"I am honored by the opportunity to serve as director of the New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy," Valdez said in the announcement. He emphasized commitment to maintaining rigorous training standards for New Mexico officers.
The transition occurs at a time when state agencies continue to refine certification requirements and specialized instruction modules. Academy leadership oversees curriculum development, instructor certification, and compliance with POST-equivalent standards for peace officers.
Valdez will report directly to the Department of Public Safety. His appointment aligns with ongoing efforts to strengthen professional development pathways for personnel in sheriff offices, municipal police departments, and state agencies throughout New Mexico.
