Colorado Springs police used a drone to track and apprehend a burglary suspect who fled the scene early on May 31, 2026.
At 3:45 a.m., officers responded to a reported burglary in the 4300 block of East Fountain Boulevard. The suspect had forced entry with a crowbar. Twenty-two-year-old Carson Johnson ran from the location carrying a duffel bag.
The Colorado Springs Police Department Real-Time Crime Center immediately launched a drone. The aircraft provided continuous real-time video of Johnson’s path through the surrounding area. Ground units followed the feed and closed in without losing visual contact.
Officers recovered the discarded duffel bag during the pursuit. Johnson was taken into custody a short distance from the original scene. He faces charges of burglary and evading police.
The Colorado Springs Gazette reported that the RTCC drone supplied precise location data that allowed officers to intercept the suspect quickly. KKTV confirmed the early-morning timeline and noted the drone remained overhead until Johnson was secured.
This incident illustrates how integrated drone systems in a Real-Time Crime Center deliver immediate situational awareness for patrol and investigative units. The technology reduces search time and limits opportunities for suspects to discard evidence or reach concealment.
Law enforcement agencies across the region continue to evaluate similar aerial tracking platforms for rapid-response calls involving fleeing individuals. The May 31 operation required no additional resources beyond the existing RTCC drone team and standard patrol response.
